MICROMV is the most stranded consumer video format ever made. Sony launched it in 2001 as the proposed successor to Mini DV, with a cassette less than half the size of Mini DV and recordings stored as MPEG-2 video at the camera. On paper it looked like a clever miniaturisation. In practice it failed almost immediately. MICROMV cassettes only worked in Sony MICROMV camcorders. Sony's MovieShaker and MovieStudio software (the only way to get the MPEG-2 files off the cassette) was buggy and locked the user into Sony's ecosystem. Mini DV remained more flexible, more compatible, and more popular. By 2005, Sony had quietly stopped making MICROMV camcorders.
Then the format was abandoned. No third-party deck ever existed. No software outside Sony's own (now-discontinued) tools could read MICROMV cassettes. The proprietary FireWire protocol Sony used to transfer the files isn't supported by any modern computer. By 2026, the only way to get MICROMV footage off the tape is to use a working Sony MICROMV camcorder — and those camcorders are increasingly rare and unreliable. The hard drive in the camcorder fails. The transport mechanism wears out. The optical sensor degrades.
The tape itself has the same problems as any consumer magnetic tape from the early 2000s: oxide flaking, dropout errors, and slow magnetic decay. Twenty-plus years on, signal recovery requires patience and expertise.
The fourth problem is the digital workflow. MICROMV records to a non-standard MPEG-2 transport stream. Many digitisation services that claim to do "Mini DV and similar" formats can't actually handle MICROMV's stream format. The audio gets desynced, the file refuses to import into standard editing software, or the transfer hangs partway through.
