Video8 was Sony's first format to use metal particle (MP) tape — the same fundamental technology that later powered Hi8 and Mini DV. Metal particle tape stores far more information per square millimetre than VHS's iron-oxide tape, which is how Sony fit a usable camcorder format into a cassette the size of an audio cassette.
But metal particles oxidise. Every Video8 tape has been slowly rusting since the day it was recorded. The original 1985-1995 Video8 tapes are now 30-40 years old and approaching the limits of metal particle tape stability. Some tapes recorded in the late 1980s are now showing severe dropouts that weren't present at the time.
Video8 also had higher dropout rates than VHS even when new — the consumer-grade tape stock and high information density meant brief signal failures were common. After three decades of additional metal oxidation, dropouts can become severe.
The other problem is playback equipment. Most Video8 camcorders are now non-functional or missing — abandoned in lofts when DV/digital cameras took over in the 2000s. Sony's EV-S350 professional Video8 deck and the EV-C200 consumer deck are increasingly rare. We maintain serviced Video8 playback equipment specifically for archival work.
Video8 recorded approximately 240 lines of horizontal resolution — comparable to VHS but half of what Hi8 would later achieve (400+ lines). While this means Video8 footage is lower resolution than Hi8, it was a remarkable achievement for a cassette the size of an audio tape. The compact form factor and long recording time (up to 120 minutes) made the Sony Handycam accessible to families who found full-size VHS camcorders too heavy and expensive.
